If the plural for goose is geese, is the plural of mongoose, mongeese? English, having its basic grammar structures and rules can either make one look certain while putting “s”, “es” or “ies” at the end of words immediately to make the singular to plural change or  dumbfound them on why it is wrong. Well, Kuvasz lovers, have no fear for the answer is here. Don’t bother putting “s” at the end of the breed’s name.

The plural version is Kuvaszok. The word Kuvasz is a Turkish word for “protector” which this breed was originally developed for. They were used to protect livestock and also its masters against any perceived threat or danger even at the risk of their own lives. This breed was originally from Tibet but was considered to be from Hungary. It is because of their sense of loyalty and guarding instinct that they renowned for.

The Hungarian Kuvasz (Canis familiaris undulans hungaricus) is large and well-proportioned dog.  It has a very sturdy built with a medium broad chest. Noses are black on the tip of a muzzle that tapers but not at all pointed.  Ears are folded but not hanging on the sides of the face and eyes are dark brown with an almond in shape.

They are born with dewclaws but the ones on the hind feet should be removed while keeping the front ones alone.  Kuvaszok (plural form) have long hair double coats; a top coat with straight, coarse, sometimes wavy hair and an undercoat that is dense, soft and woolly. Their hair is short on the head and feet but longer and wavy on the body and legs. Their coat color is white although there are ivory colored ones with dark skin. Male Kuvasz are between 28 to 32 inches in height while females are 25.5 to 27.5 inches. Accepted weight is 66 to 135 pounds.

The Kuvasz is a native and ancient dog breed of Hungary. The name is pronounced KOO-vahss in the Hungarian language and the the plural is not Kuvaszes, but Kuvaszok, pronounced KOO-vah-sock. Mention of this breed can be found in old Hungarian texts and books. In the past it was used to guard livestock, but has been increasingly found in homes as a pet over the last seventy years.

The word, Kuvasz, has an interesting origin. Some believed it has Sumerian origins. However, it most likely comes from the Turkic word kavas meaning guard or soldier or kuwasz meaning protector. Turkey invaded Hungary in the 16th century, so it is not surprising that the name of the dog was also influnced by them. Other theories believe it may have originated from the ancient farmers of Russia, the Chuvash, who also owned similar flock guards, and nurtured and contributed many words to the Hungarian language. The Sumerian-origin theory hypothesizes that the name comes from the Sumerian phrase Ku Assa, meaning dog of the horse, and that the Hungarian word kutya, meaning dog, is also derived from ancient Sumerian. Since Hungarians are originally from the East, all three may be correct. Nevertheless, it only shows how old this breed really is!
