Kuvasz health issues

Big Dog | December 1st, 2011

Kuvasz is a robust breed of dogs that originated from Hungary. Despite their large structure built for guarding livestock, they still possess health issues that should not be overlooked. Here are some common health problems that Kuvasz may encounter:

Kuvasz

Hip Dysplasia

  • Description: This bone structure deformity is caused by heredity and environment. It occurs when the head of the thigh bone fits poorly to the hip socket and produces improper rotation. The problem begins during the puppy stage when the hip joint forms abnormally. Environmental factors would be lack of exercise and unmanaged weight.
  • Symptoms: Kuvasz will encounter hind leg limping and laming. Noticeable changes would be hopping like a rabbit, difficulty in walking or hesitation to climb stairs. This is because of great pain caused by the grinding of the bones in the hind quarters and progressively causes arthritis.

Osteochondritis Dissecans

  • Description: This disorder is a common deformity encountered by Kuvasz because of their rapid growth. It starts as an abnormality in the transformation of the cartilage to a bone and then breaks off into the joining space.
  • Symptoms: The broken pieces of bone cause pain, lameness, and swelling in the areas affected by this condition (ie. shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle). In time, this could lead to arthritis.

Gastric Dilation/Torsion

  • Description: Sometimes referred to as bloat, is a condition where the stomach enlarges due to accumulation of gas and is common to deep-chested dogs. After enlarging, the stomach may twist and rotate causing torsion that prevents the release of gas through belching. Bloat is considered as an emergency and is fatal to a Kuvasz.
  • Symptoms: Noticeable effects of this would be excessive drooling, attempt to vomit, heavy breathing and gagging. It could also be observed that the stomach area is inflated although it is not recommended to touch it. Extreme cases would result to shock or collapse.

The most famous Kuvasz

Big Dog | March 8th, 2011

The most famous appearance of this dog breed was in the movie Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco which is the sequel to the Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. Three characters play roles from the first movie in this episode: Sassy, the hilarious Himalayan cat, Shadow, the wise Golden Retriever and Chance, the fun-loving American Bulldog.

The adventure begins when the owners of the pets decide to take a vacation in Canada. On their way to Canada, Chance panics and the animals escape from their carrier and they suddenly find themselves on the streets of San Francisco. They don’t have any other option, but to get ready for the hazardous, long journey and find their way home.

During their struggle to get home Chance falls in love with a Kuvasz whose name is Delilah. At first Delilah’s pack leader refuses to help them, because he has always been ignored by humans, and therefore he doesn’t like them and their pets. But later on, the three friends have a chance to prove that they deserve to be helped out, as they rescue a boy and a kitten from a fire.

We can see in this movie how gentle and affectionate a Kuvasz can be.

Is a Kuvasz a good choice for me?

Big Dog | October 28th, 2010

I would say definitely yes, if you would like to have a relatively huge dog in size that is very obedient and will protect you and your family at any cost in case of dangers. They are usually gentle and very affectionate, however are not advised for the novice dog owner. They love children, but you should never let the dog and the kids unsupervised, as they can never overcome their herding instincts. It is not advised to have another dog breed together with them in the house, as they are territorial.

The coat of this breed is a coarse, straight or wavy double coat that requires frequent care, especially during their seasonal shedding. They don’t like warm weather, so the best is to keep them in colder climates to prevent them from becoming sick and from shedding all year round. This is a healthy breed, although they are prone to health issues like hip dysplasia and bone problems.

Training of the Kuvasz is easy, as these dogs are very intelligent and obedient. They require consistent, gentle training and early socialization. The Kuvasz excels in herding and obedience.

All in all, this breed is the best for people who can provide them a loving environment, a medium, fenced yard and daily exercise to keep them happy. Otherwise these dogs tend to become slightly destructive.

I hope these few sentences will be able to help you decide whether the Kuvasz is the best breed for you.
